Chlorine remains the most widely used disinfectant for keeping pool water healthy, but the ideal dosage varies depending on whether your pool runs on salt or uses traditional chlorine treatment. A poorly adjusted level, whether too low or too high, leads to the same problems: cloudy water, algae, irritation, or an unpleasant smell. Here are the key benchmarks to find the right balance.

The ideal chlorine level, in general

For a typical family pool, the free chlorine level should sit between 1 and 3 mg/L (ppm). Below 1 mg/L, disinfection is no longer guaranteed. Above 3 mg/L, the water becomes needlessly harsh on skin, eyes, and equipment, without a proportional gain in effectiveness.

This level should always be checked alongside pH, ideally between 7.0 and 7.4. A pH that is too high sharply reduces chlorine's effectiveness, even when the measured amount looks correct.

Traditional pool: chlorine added by hand

In a traditional chlorine pool (tablets, liquid chlorine, or granules), the level fluctuates faster, especially during hot weather, heavy use, or after a storm. Regular testing, ideally two to three times a week in summer, helps you adjust dosing before an imbalance sets in.

You should also keep an eye on stabilizer (cyanuric acid), which protects chlorine from UV rays but, in excess, reduces its actual effectiveness. A too-high stabilizer level can make measured chlorine look sufficient when it is no longer working properly.

Saltwater pool: chlorine produced continuously

A saltwater pool still relies on chlorine, the salt chlorinator converts dissolved salt into chlorine directly in the water, continuously. The target level stays the same, between 1 and 3 mg/L, but the way you get there changes. All you need to do is adjust the chlorinator's output instead of adding chlorine manually.

  • Check the salt level recommended by your manufacturer, usually between 3 and 5 g/L depending on the model.
  • Increase output during hot weather or heavy pool use.
  • Keep an eye on the salt cell, as gradual scale buildup reduces chlorine output without this being immediately obvious.
