Proper pool maintenance always starts with reliable water testing. Without accurate measurements, there is no way to know whether pH, chlorine, or alkalinity sit in the right range, and therefore no way to treat the water effectively. Three methods exist: test strips, electronic testers, and laboratory analysis. Each has its strengths and limits, depending on how often you test and how much precision you need.

Test strips

These are the most widely used, since they are simple and inexpensive. Just dip the strip in the water for a few seconds, then compare the resulting colors to the provided chart. Most strips measure pH, free chlorine, alkalinity, and sometimes stabilizer.

Their main drawback is precision: reading the colors stays somewhat subjective, especially with mild color blindness or poor lighting. They work well for quick, regular checks, but less well for a detailed diagnosis when a problem persists.

The electronic tester

More precise than strips, an electronic tester (or photometer) gives an exact numeric value for each parameter. It removes the subjectivity of visual color reading and lets you track water changes far more reliably, which is especially useful for fine-tuning automated treatment or a saltwater pool.

It costs more than a simple pack of strips, and some models require consumable reagents that need regular restocking. Still, it is an excellent investment for anyone who tests frequently or manages a large pool.

Laboratory analysis

For the most complex cases, such as water that stays cloudy despite correct treatment, or suspected dissolved metals, a specialized lab analysis remains the most complete option. It can detect parameters that basic strips and testers cannot measure, such as copper, iron, or certain phosphates.

This method requires taking a sample and waiting a few days for results, which makes it better suited to situations where quick methods fail to explain a persistent problem.

Which method should you choose?

  • Test strips: for simple, frequent checks, two to three times a week in summer.
  • Electronic tester: for precise tracking, especially on a saltwater pool or with automated treatment.
  • Lab analysis: to diagnose a persistent problem that other methods cannot explain.
